Leveling And Setting Out - Workforce Training
For: Foremen and Site Supervisory Staff
Duration: 3 days
Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for senior heavy equipment operators, foremen, and site supervisors who are responsible for site leveling and setting out activities.
Aims:
On completion of the course participants should be able to:
- Interpret details from site drawings
- Practice principles of leveling (to include grid leveling and transferring bench marks)
- Correctly apply linear measurement methods
- Set out roads and drainage systems using tapes and optical levels with confidence and accuracy.
Course Contents:
- Keeping records
- Safety aspects
- Principles and methods of leveling
- Change points
- Checking instruments
- Use of laser leveling equipment
- Setting out ditch and drainage lines
- Carry out all necessary calculations to establish the setting out from coordinate information on drawings and computer printouts.
- Understand the criteria relating to specified accuracies for setting out and decide upon the equipment and methods to use in order to meet these accuracies.
Training Methods:
Classroom presentation and practical on-the-job exercises (culvert pipe placement, ditch and drain alignment, slope maintenance, erosion containment, culvert maintenance).

Leveling And Setting Out - Workforce Training
For: Heavy Equipment Operators
Duration: 2 days
Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for heavy equipment operators and other construction personnel (working/foremen) who are responsible for limited leveling and setting out for earth ditches and drainage systems.
Aims:
On completion of the course participants should be able to:
- Understand the need for water flow and level
- Understand basic leveling and setting out techniques
- Be able to set up and calibrate basic optical level instrument
- Be able to read and understand level staff calibrations and markings
- Be able to make simple calculations
- Be able to apply and conduct leveling activities as part of their job responsibilities as a heavy equipment operator
- Read and understand measuring tapes, drainage marker level pegs, batter and slope boards
- Introduction to laser leveling

Duration: 1 day
Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for heavy equipment operators who are responsible for limited leveling of earth ditches and drainage systems.
Aims:
On completion of the course participants should be able to:
- Understand basic leveling methods
- Be able to set up basic optical level instruments
- Be able to read and understand level staff calibrations and markings
- Be able to make simple calculations

Spot Digging - Underground Utilities - Workforce Training
For: Heavy Equipment Operators and Working Foremen
Duration: 1 day
Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for heavy equipment operators and foremen who are responsible for digging or excavating near or around underground utilities.
Aims:
On completion of the course participants should be able to:
- Understand safety aspects of spot digging for underground utility and related excavation work
- Understand Louisiana One Call system
- Be able to understand and identify utility markings and color codes used by Louisiana One Call
- Be able to set up equipment for spot digging
- Be able to dig around and locate underground utilities
- Understand basic soil characteristics
Course Contents:
- Safety aspects and OSHA compliance (equipment and public considerations)
- Utility color code system and utility types
- Soil and ground condition considerations for spot digging
- Emergency procedures in case of accident (gas, electrical, water, telephone, cable, etc.)
- Equipment safety - setting up machine
Training Methods:
Classroom presentation and practical on-the-job exercises to strengthen and confirm learning (spot digging around underground utilities, utility recognition, setting machine for spot digging, digging procedures).
